Do you know about Rule 57?

For the safety of the driver and other road users, many countries have legislation in place that requests owners secure their pets while a vehicle is moving. Yet research suggests that around the globe, awareness of these laws is fairly low.  Insurance companies are also starting to take a stronger stance on this. If your unrestrained dog is found to have contributed to a road accident, your insurance claim may be invalidated – and nobody wants that.

Rule 57 in the Highway Code states: "When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars."

Unsecured dogs in cars is a global issue, here are just a few examples:

  • UK:  69% dog owners are not aware of law
  • USA: 84% of drivers do not secure their dog in car
  • Germany: Up to 52% of drivers do not secure their dog in car
  • Netherlands:  51% of drivers had an emergency due to their dog
  • Australia: 5000 dogs a year injured by leaping from vehicles
